dream: I was a poor black kid in middleschool

and a female friend of mine joined me on the construction site for a new school nearby, where we worked with the hardhatted guys putting up walls and tiling bathrooms, until we grew up into highschool and fell into our own gendered cliques, full of wistful reminiscences about younger, purer friendships. The new school looked great.

dream: someone with more knowledge would be more dangerous

Being carried out to dinner with various friends in sedan chairs. The first place we intend to go is one person (Mags?)’ favorite, since one can be in and done in an hour, eat really well, and only pay $8. That place is closed, though, so the sedan chairs take us to another restaurant, way up in a skyscraper, a place fancy enough to have its own nuclear reactor and special entrances to same. While trying to find the correct door in the all-white halls, I notice one of the parking valets walking around looking suspicious. Then I notice him connecting a bunch of filing cabinets with cat5 cabling, opening a window, and pushing the first one out, presumably to pull something else critical out when all the cabinets fall. I manage to find some scissors and cut the cable before all of the cabinets go, but 2 or 3 still slip out, and I peek over the edge and watch them hit and shatter, wincing at the people running and ducking out of the way. I have a conversation with the security folks about working at a reactor, and ask them whether someone with actual knowledge of how a reactor works would be more dangerous. They agree.

dream: two this morning

one, an immersive trip home, where David hung out with me but still managed to do everything wrong. He had a startac phone, like I used to have, but he’d covered it with packing tape and only wanted to get me and (other character) to go to a strip club with him.

Then, after Kate left for work, a Lord of the Rings dream, following Sam and Frodo as they met a hyena (which transformed from a bloodthirsty beast to a yellow lab) and a snake (who later turned out to be Gandalf, wending his way back to human form after dying) and a valkyrie (the hope being that the yellow lab and the valkyrie would find each other) and culminating by coming down a steep staircase into a room filled with orcs who fired their bows and arrows out the window to signal that we’d walked right into their trap, and a long scene in this room as we tried to figure a way out — we had the Ring, they had us.

Irish Breakfast

on a sunny day, office still in a shambles and phone books providing the only ergonomic help I’m getting, here. Woke up to intriguing reports about the Group of 21, protesting at the WTO about rich countries’ farm subsidies and the effects it has on poorer countries. Holistic system we live in, here.

One day on the farm

There were clear beads of dew hanging motionless at the edges of the small, white flowers. My mom playing tour guide in the background, I stepped into the bathtub, secure in its wood and tile nest, and touched one drop of the dew, which turned out to be sap; nearly as thin as water, it had only the faintest feel against my finger as I reached out and left the flower scent against Kate’s neck, just below and behind her right ear.

My visit ran too short, as usual on my annual visits home. Visiting with my parents since leaving home for college has been an exercise in extremes — either we overstay one another’s welcome, their familiar sighs and shower hairs oddly grating in *my* apartment, or we understay, leaving just as the faint strains of a family’s machinery starting to move starts to come in.
