THE LAW OF PREDICTABLE CONSEQUENCES: Students at East High School wanted
to form a new club in 1995, the Gay-Straight Alliance. School officials
were aghast, but the Salt Lake City (Utah) School Board realized it
couldn't legally discriminate against just that one club, so all
extracurricular clubs were banned to keep it out. Now, "people don't
care about school anymore," says a student. Students and teachers say
school spirit is gone, along with the pep club, the Students Against
Drunk Driving chapter, the Young Republicans and Young Democrats clubs,
ethnic pride groups, and many others. Racial tensions are now higher,
students and teachers say. However, the Gay-Straight Alliance is
thriving, thanks to outside support. "A lot of the education in this
school has been lost," a teacher laments, but the kids did learn
something from the Board's political machinations. "The kids get the
message that it's OK to discriminate." (AP) ...Kids always learn best
from real life examples.
TRUE LESSONS II: The Bureau For At-Risk Youth of Plainview, N.Y., has
recalled an "anti-drug" pencil it was giving to local school children.
The pencils have the slogan "Too Cool to Do Drugs" on them, but as the
pencils are sharpened down, the message becomes "Cool to Do Drugs" and,
later, "Do Drugs". When shown the unintended message, a spokeswoman for
the Bureau noted the group was "actually a little embarrassed that we
didn't notice that sooner." The pencils will be redone with the message
text printed the other way. (AP) ...Then they can start work on the
ones that say "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk".
PASS THE WORD: The Society for the German Language helped compile a list
of the "100 words that best reflect the 20th century." A high
percentage are English words, such as bikini, comics, computer,
Holocaust, jeans, recycling, sex and star. Some of the German words on
the list, such as autobahn, have also been adopted into English. (AP)
...English is the de facto lingua franca.
THE FRENCH NOSE: The Paris-region transport authority plans to use 1.5
tons of perfume per month to cover the infamous stench of city's
subway. Metro director Jacques Rapoport says the new scent,
"Madeleine", was designed as "a smell that was sweet rather than
violent, that lingered for two weeks and that suggested a feeling of
cleanliness and well-being rather than of filthiness being covered up."
(Reuters) ...The city's hookers have been looking for that scent for
centuries.
