Gambling

It’s the coldest night of the year, and I just got back from the bi-weekly poker game I play in, with friends. As we were suiting up to leave, I had a quick phone call with a friend who’s a professional musician, out in LA doing auditions. It struck me, in the kind of pseudo-deep thinking that one gets into after several hours of card play, that trying to make it as a performer is much like gambling – you may or may not have the best hand, and that fact may or may not be relevant to whether you make it in your chosen industry. Sometimes you have nothing and make it, sometimes you get screwed when you’re holding what is, odds-on, the best hand at the table.
